NHS hospital trusts provide acute hospital services. This is treatment provided in a hospital for medical and surgical conditions that cannot be treated at a local doctor's surgery or clinic.
In Kent there are four hospital trusts, each responsible for managing one or more hospitals. These trusts are accountable to the South East Coast Strategic Health Authority in terms of strategic planning and performance management. They are funded mainly through primary care trusts who commission (pay for) hospitals to provide treatment for patients in their area.
